Ask most fight fans who they’d like to see Robbie Lawlor face now that Rory MacDonald has moved over to Bellator and the chances are that Donald Cerrone would be the name with the most votes. Both fighters have an indominable spirit and aren’t afraid to trade blows, so the confirmation early this morning that the two would face off at UFC 213 in July has made a lot of fans very happy.
Currently ranked number three in the Welterweight rankings since his devestating loss to Tyrone Woodley, Robbie Lawlor hasn’t fought in nearly a year. A fight with Cerrone was originally scheduled for UFC 205 in New York, but didin’t happen because Lawlor decided to take more time off following his loss to Woodley at UFC 201. Prior to that, Lawlor had been on a five fight streak after winning the belt from Johny Hendricks, including two defences.
Cerrone, ranked 11, meanwhile, has been one of the hardest working fighters in the UFC and has been the go-to man for last minute opponent changes. His willingness to fight anyone with very little notice has seen him beat four opponents in a row after moving up to Welterweight following his TKO loss to Rafael Dos Anjos on Fox 17. More recently, Cerrone lost to Jorge Masvidal via TKO at Fox 23, back in January, so a win against Lawlor will go a long way towards putting him back in contention for the Welterweight strap.
Regardless of the outcome, this fight is going to be a heavily hyped slug-fest and has the potential to eclipse Lawlor – MacDonald as a fan favourite.
UFC 213 will be the main show in an International Fight Week that sees three events take place at the T-Mobile Arena – UFC Fight Night takes place on Thursday July 6th, then it’s on to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): “Redemption” Finale on Friday July 7th. UFC 213 will cap things off on Saturday July 8th.
