You’d be forgiven for thinking that McGregor was the only person currently fighting on the UFC – even though his next fight will be in Boxing. However, despite Notorious dominating the headlines, it is Mighty Mouse who has dominated at this year’s ESPY Awards.

Demetrious Johnson was crowned ‘Best Fighter’ at the 2017 ESPY Awards yesterday, beating the aforementioned Conor McGregor, as well as boxers Gennady Golovkin, Terence Crawford and Andre Ward. Not bad for a guy who has been threatened with having his division removed from the UFC.

Johnson is currently number one in the pound-for-pound USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie rankings, but has recently had a much publicised spat with his boss, Dana White, after declining to fight a larger former champion, T.J. Dillashaw, in favour of taking a fight against Ray Borg, the guy the UFC originally wanted him to face for his record breaking [if DJ wins] run of title defences.

Best Fighter

Demetrious Johnson, MMA (WINNER)

Terence Crawford, Boxing

Gennady Golovkin, Boxing

Conor McGregor, MMA

Andre Ward, Boxing

It’s always good to see the best-of-the-best rewarded – and it’s made all the sweeter given the pressure he’s under from the UFC. Hopefully, the award will translate to at least a few more PPV points.
